Arguing that wearing nice clothes to church is a way to honor God shows flawed thinking. People don’t wear a suit and tie because they think God wants them to, they do it because they think the other people at church want them to.
I’ve been to Jamaica and Haiti numerous times. Before my first trip to each country, our leader reminded us the need to dress up for church so that we didn’t “offend the natives.” “They take church very seriously,” we were told, “and causal dress is a sign of disrespect.”
Not true. Jamaican Christians and Haitian Christians dress up for church because white missionaries told them they need to.
And you dress up for church because your mom told you to.
