Nothing new.

The uncomfortable Pip encounters societal reality.  From Dickens’ Great Expectations:

Before I had been standing at the window five minutes, they somehow conveyed to me that they were all toadies and humbugs.¹

They all had a listless and dreary air of waiting somebody’s pleasure.

1.  toadies and humbugs: flatters and people who are not who they pretend to be.
