"Sonny, he has a five-year plan."

“What is it, don’t die?”

If you don’t know the source of the above quote, please shave your beard, sell your buggy, and have running water installed.

Seriously though, over the weekend I thought about drawing up a rough outline of my goals for the next five years.  Then I laughed.  Sure, making such a list would be thought-provoking and probably enjoyable.  Heck, it’s actually a good idea to have specific goals in order to give life concrete direction.  Still, I couldn’t help but think, “There is no way I can plan the next five years of my life.  It’d be like asking God to make things go crazy.”

When I think about the past five years of my life I realize that I would have never expected to be where I am today.

Five years ago today, I was about to meet Kassie.  That’s where it all begins…

What I would have expected back in 2004:

– to be teaching English in inner-city St. Louis or overseas

– to have earned a Master’s degree

– to be single or in a serious dating relationship; maybe thinking about marriage if I had some money

-finding some way to be involved in baseball (Cardinals in STL or coaching overseas)

What I have, but didn’t expect to have in 2004:

– a wife

– 3 kids (one in heaven, one in my house, one in my wife’s uterus)

– a house that we completely remodeled (mortgage included)

– two cars with a combined 266,000 miles

– a job in Hannibal, Missouri

– a new church family

Now to get back to that life planning…

(“Old Man River, zip it, or I’ll break your hip!”)

  1. Davis says:

I bet you’re happy with what you have, though

  2. Brian Phillips says:

Oh yeah — I wouldn’t trade the two situations for anything in the world.

This is different, but it’s better.

I’ll tell you man, meet the girl you want to marry and everything goes nuts. In a good way.

  3. Kassie says:

I’m glad I could help your life “go nuts.” I’m glad plans don’t always go as planned. 🙂
