Disclosure: I’m just re-saying what my amigo Mike has already said.
Hosea 2:10 “Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall rescue her out of my hand.”
Mike was right when he said this verse isn’t about God’s inescapable wrath. That’s a discussion for a different day and a more articulate blogger. In this verse in Hosea, God is showing us just how jealous He is for His people. Our Triune God will not allow any other lover, if I can use that word, to captivate and own His people. Jesus said the same thing in John 10:27-29.
But how does God keep us? By exposing our lewdness. Ultimately, our sin was exposed in revolting fashion on the cross as Jesus endured Hell for the sins of his people. But our sin is also exposed daily. When we read the Bible, then the Holy Spirit convicts our hearts, and when other Christians encourage and hold us accountable.
If you are part of the Bride of Christ, He will not give you to anyone else. And a huge part of our security, or our perseverance, as Christians is the on-going revealing of the sin in our lives that competes for our hearts.
Christian: God is unfathomably jealous for you.
“In awful and surprising truth, we are the objects of His love. You asked for a loving God; you have one. The great spirit you so lightly invoked, the “lord of terrible aspect,” is present; not a senile benevolence that drowsily wishes you to be happy in your own way, not the cold philanthropy of a conscientious magistrate, not the care of a host who feels responsible for the comfort of his guests, but the consuming fire Himself, the Love that made the worlds, persistent as the artist’s love for his work and despotic as a man’s love for a dog, provident and venerable as a father’s love for a child, jealous, inexorable, exacting as love between the sexes…It is certainly a burden of glory not only beyond our deserts but also, except in rare moments of grace, beyond our desiring.” (from A Grief Observed)
