No Condemnation

Rain & Sun

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of Life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own son, in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1-4

This has been my first memorization attempt in years and years. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever memorized four verses all together. I typed it from memory, so the punctuation might be a bit off. But I’m not memorizing punctuation – I’m memorizing words. Strong words that speak to my spirit.

Here are some of the reasons I decided to tackle this challenge right now:

  1. I need something to hang on to. I’m probably the only one who struggles with this; but, when I’m doing mindless tasks like laundry, dishes, sweeping, etc… I tend to wallow in self-pity. I wonder when someone will invent a machine to do these things for me, so I can do something important… like sit down and watch Psych, or read a good book. So – it is good for my soul to be working on hiding these words in my heart. It helps me use my time in a much more God-honoring way.
  2. It helps me sleep. This may seem silly to you, but it’s real to me. For as long as I can remember, it has taken me at least 30 minutes of laying in bed in the dark to finally fall asleep. Now, instead of counting sheep, I’m meditating on the Word and I’m falling asleep a lot more quickly.
  3. It’s something. There are a lot of mornings when my kids beat me up. Now, I don’t mean literally, but they wake up before I do. That’s obviously not ideal, but it happens. So, when I don’t all the early-morning Bible time I want, I still have at least a couple of verses to remember. It’s not a full-out Bible study, but it’s definitely better than nothing.

There are a lot more reasons to memorize scripture, but this is just a small part of my list. Life is crazy right now, but I’m glad I added this thing to my plate. It’s worth the extra expenditure of brain power.

All good reasons, Kassie. I wake up a lot in the night, so having these scriptures in my mind is a beneficial use of my time. (Although I tend to really mess them up in the middle of the night. ha).

Memorizing scripture is always so much more than just memorizing; we’re also meditating and really focusing on the words. Hard to beat that.

    Glad we’re in this together!

Your brain is becoming a portable mini-bible. 🙂 I really like how you’ve laid out these reasons and I think you are very wise to be undertaking this. Especially Romans 8! Such an awesome chapter of the bible! I’m doing it too. That first week, I would be getting into a pity-party-place and I would hear the whispery soundtrack in my mind… “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…” Awesome stuff.
